![]() ![]() To make it clear that the strategy is unashamed and deliberate, Riviere offers an epigraph from Bernhard: “It is the absurd ideas that are the clearest ideas, and the most absurd ideas are the most important.” So the English author Sam Riviere’s first novel, Dead Souls (after Gogol), unfolds in a single three-hundred-page, one-paragraph monologue, deploying with an infallible ear all the obsessive rhythms, italicized repetitions, and general spirit of scandalized denunciation and acute insecurity that we immediately associate with Thomas Bernhard. ![]() ![]() If you are writing a comedy about imitation, plagiarism, or simply the monotonous sameness of so much contemporary literature, so much contemporary discourse, it makes sense perhaps to borrow the title of your work from one of the most celebrated novels of all time and to write it in one of the most radical and recognizable of modern prose styles. ![]() ![]() ![]() We follow three separate character threads that weave together by the end of the episode, the most important of which is that of our protagonist, Alexandra Daddario. Having set the appropriately spooky tone with a decrepit mansion, a wild-haired catatonic woman, and a syringe full of thorazine in the cold open, the main job of “The Witching Hour” is to set the board for the rest of the series. Oh yes, there is also some shoe-horned feminism which I’m choosing not to let bug me. ![]() The Mayfairs are doing real witch shit like spawning demons (potentially) and giving mansplainers magic aneurysms. These are not Glendas or Halliwell sisters fighting the forces of evil. ![]() For two, it’s nice to see witch content today that gets back to the more depraved tropes of the genre. For one, I’m always happy to see a show taking full advantage of the high-camp aesthetics provided by the Catholic church (if I took one positive thing from seven years of Catholic school it was a deep appreciation for ceremonial melodrama). I am, however, optimistic, as “The Witching Hour” included many of my favorite supernatural things. I wasn’t sure how Anne Rice’s Mayfair Witches would measure up against the unholy three-ring orgy that was Anne Rice’s Interview With the Vampire, and after finishing the pilot episode, I’m still not sure. While All-of-a-Kind Family is one of those falsely sunny books that came out of the 1940s and 1950s, it's nice to believe that this is the life that Taylor lived as a child. This first in the series is particularly insightful in its introduction of the Jewish high holy days - Sabbath days, Yom Kippur, Purim and Succos among them. Most distinguishing about them is the fact that they are Jewish, not as a stereotyping characteristic but rather a means to explore landscape that hadn't yet been handled in children's literature. Thus began a career that is most distinguished for the series detailing the adventures of five sisters early in this century.
